SCHOOL GAMES.
SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION AT RESERVE.
There was a large attendance at the Reserve yesterday, when 'the annual school games were held, and proved most successful. These games, winch/ ; are of undoubted benefit the child- | ron, engendering- at once a love of open-air games arid a sense of sports- j manship, two.things inseparable from, j the character of the average New Zoa- : lander. » : •These games were instituted in 1904, and. for some years the sports, including games and athletic events, were held in the grounds of Wacren-ga-a-hika College. .Public support was not forthcoming to any great extent, however, and fell off, the games being discontinued about 11 or : 12 years ago. The games were revived after a year or two of inactivity and were held on the Show grounds at To Hapara, and in more recent 1 years on tiie Reserve. A steady increase has occurred in the number of entries, and this year reached such a high figure that" it was decided to hold .separate days for games and lor athletic events. Athletic sports will in consequence he held sometime later in the year, probably in -December. Yesterday’s games were a marked success in every way, the arrangements being capably carried out by an , energetic body of officials. . - 'The following arc the results of vesterda y’ s gain es : TUG OF WAR. —Open.— First Round.—Convent beat Maugapapa "A”; Te Hapara beat Mangap ap a “B” ; Gisborne “A” beat lie Arai; Patutalii beat Haiti.
