SUICIDAL POLE.

SAVED BY FRENCH GENDARME. (Received July 2G, 8.45 p.m.) PARIS, July 25. A Pole working in the devastated areas climbed a tree and shouted to the villagers below, ‘‘l am going to jump into another world.” The Pole then tied his braces round his neck and slipped them around the branch. Meanwhile a gendarme came up, pulled out a revolver and threatened to shoot the Pole if he jumped. The Pole did jump, and tho gendarme climbing' the tree cut the braces. The Pole is now in hospital with a broken leg, a fractured arm and a sore throat.—A. and N.Z.C.A.
