PROGRESSIVE BOROUGH

SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTION IN RATES. OAAIARU, May 11. At a special meeting of the Oamaru Borugh Council last night, it was decided. in view of the solid position of the municipal finances, to make a reduction of threepence in the £' on rates. This concession, with a 1 per cent, lower water rate, gives approximately a reduction of s|d in the £. Further substantial reductions could have been made but- the Council decided to provide out of revenue £‘2ooo for additional electricity plant and another £2OOO for other capital works. thus obviating the necessity for raising a small loan. The Borough valuation (annual value) is now £82,000, being 50 per cent, increase since 1914.—P.A.
