The House of Commons read a first time Mr. Ponsonby’s Bill to tcrnnder the ten minutes rule. The Bill minute hereditary titles, introduced allows a holder to renounce the title, and no heir or heiress horn after the Act is passed will be allowed to succeed to the peerage. Mr. Ponsonby claimed that the Bill erred on the side of moderation. The hereditary principle was a survival of mediaevalism. The dignity of merit and distinction were rapidly disappearing from the peerage, and party payments, beer and whisky were taking their place. Hereditary titles ministered to vanity, encouraged corruption, led to. snobbishness and flunkeyism. Mr.Ponsonby added that the Labor party when it came into power would not confer hereditary honors. The Speaker inadvertently forgot to put the question to the “Noes,’’ so the motion was registered as carried nem con.—A. and N.Z.C.A.
