Such seems to he the-view of the Prison Commissioners in England, as they inaugurated classes in French, shorthand, .bookkeeping, engineering, and Spanish in Maidstone Gaol. , The classes arc well attended, and voluntarily held in the prisoners spare time. This in addition to the abolition ol the broad arrow garb and a supply of washstands and mirrors in the cells, suggests “minds innocent and Quiet will readily seek out scuh a hermitage.
