NEARLY A FATALITY.
WOMAN WANDERS INTO RIVER
FOUND SUBMERGED TO THE NECK IN MUD.
To be buried up to tlie neck in river mud must be an unpleasant enough experience, but to be in that unhappy position yvhen the tide is coming m, is infinitely yvorse. Yet this was yvhat bcfel an old yvoman, named Mrs Cui tis, 65 years of age, on Saturday ingut.. Shortly before 11 o’clock, the attention of two men, Mr W. Preston and Mr. Winter, was attracted by tho cries of a yvoman coming from the river by the Roebuck road bridge, and, upon investigating, they discovered that Mrs Curtis had wandered into the river to the water’s edge, the tide being very low at tho time, and, :n her struggles, had become so deeplv embedded in the mud that practically only her head was clear. With great difficulty, they succeed*ed in extricating her, and conveyed her to the bank. In the meantime, somebody had rung up the police, and Constables Gribben and Fitzgerald arrived on the scene just as the rescue had been effected. One of the constables took charge of the yvoman, and brought her to her home. She is a widoyv and lives by herself, and was yesterday- reported to be none the yvorse for her adventure. Her only explanation for her position yvas that she had lost herself, and wandered off the road into the river, thinking that it was only a small creek which she had to cross.
