RESULTS OF YESTERDAY’S' MATCHES. ■
SOME GOOD SHOOTING
TRENTHAM. March 5
The weather is fine, with a dull, steady light. When the shooting commenced at eight o’clock at 300 yards of the Auckland match, the other ten shots to he „ fired at 600 yards only, the faintest breeze was stirring, but there was just enough certainty about its variations to catch the men napping sometimes. The Wellington match, ten shots at 500 and 600 yards, will he taken later, and the Dominion match, started on Saturday, will be completed with fifteen shots at 900 yards. This does not count ir. the aggregates. As the morning progressed the conditions became more difficult, and the 600 yards of the Auckland match proved the undoing of promising scores brought back from the 300 yards. Three 49’s were registered there by Smart, James, and G. Hairison. Smart added 43 at 600 yards, and apparently wins the match. James got 42, making him 91, hut was beaten for second place on the count back by Briden, whose card read 45, 46, 91. Eighty mines were fairly numerous, hut prize money will he won by comparatively low 80’s. “Carbine” Ross, who only had 38 on at the 300 yards, created a diversion by ringing on the possible at 600 yards, which was a really hue performance under the circumstances. O. M. Moss, who wins the Service Championship, which carries with it the coveted Kynoch Cup, did the same two years ago at Trentliem, and last year at Greytown lie finished twelfth. He has made a special study of service shooting, and frequently profited thereby. In 1909. 1910, and 1912 lie competed at Bisley, and m the latter year he finished fifty-second in the Queen Alary Service Championship. Moss is a man with a shady eye to business, but is -no advertiser of his aim. . The fourth day on the Trentham range was one of beauty from a spectator’s point of view but, despite its genial warmth, and the most cheering sunshine, it remains in the riflemen’s eyes a day of obelized contradictions. The events disposed of were the Auckland match, ten shots each at 300 and 600 yards, the Wellington match, ten shots each at 500 and 600 yards, and the final stage of the Dominion match, fifteen shots at 900 yards. At the close of the two first mentioned, two aggregate scores had developed. The Trentham aggregate, comprising all scores at 300, 500,’and 600 yards in the belt series, plus the opening match, showed F. H. James in a leading position, with a score of 409, out of a possible of 455. He is closely followed by H. V. Croxton 404. James takes the Carbine Cup. : When a start was made on the 300 yards of the Auckland match, conditions were as nearly perfect as the ! average marksmen may expect out of ; Elysian fields, and some hard-hitting i was registered, the best being Jiy Smart, James, and G. Harrison (Kaponga). The latter, however, fell to !38 -at' 600 yards, but Smart and ! James got 42 and 41 respectively. Bryclen had onlv got 45 at 300, but 46" at 600 yards put him into second place, ahead of James. Lamborn, Simmoncls, and Roots put on 4S at 300, but fell off pt 600, where there was a puzling wind, varying from strong and light to an extraordinary fishtail, with occasional puffs from the left to fill the rifleman’s cup of sor- | row. The light was now bright, and a mirage was in evidence. Elevation ; was thus a source of trouble, hut ’ chiefly it was windage that kept the ■ men screwing back and forth on the gauges. j The most sensational feature of the ■ shoot was the possible by “Carbine” i Ross at 600 vards. He had only made 1 made 38 at 300. At 500 yards of the ! Wellington match, Lentfer rattled on a possible, but 37 was the most lie I could register at the longer range. . H. C. Jones and Trotman, a tyro, ’ came back with 47, and :.got on 46 and I 43 respectively, getting first and sec- ■ ond prizes in the match. ! The day finished with fifteen shots ! at 900 yards to complete tlie Dominion match, and some boards disclosed very ragged lines of figures. Cliing, who had topped the list at the first range with 7, came a cropper with 29. One score was a line of i cyphers.—P.A. ! The results were as follows:
