When charged at Pontefract with deserting his wife and child, Ernest Coulter, a soldier, produced the following document. “This is to certify that I, Mrs Coulter, am leaving my husband, Ernest Coulter, and will not hold any claim on him for myself and child. The document was dated the end of July, and a few days later the woman and child entered Pontefract workhouse. . ~ Mrs Coulter admitted signing the paper, which was duly witnessed, but she said it was prepared by her husband, and she did not understand that it meant he was going to desert her. • . Coulter was sent to prison for a month. Mrs Coulter wept bitterly on hearing the sentence.
