KARITENE’S MISHAP.
FQREHOLD FLOODED AFTER VESSEL STRUCK.
DIVERSE REPORTS OF SALVAGE.
MELBOURNE, Dec. 28. Captain Burch relates that the Ceduna was the first to reach the scene of the Karitane’s disaster. Ho noticed a “want assistance” signal. After the weather had cleared he approached the Karitane, which was "partly submerged. Captain Spain reported that the steamer struck on the forefoot and stove in the forehold, which was quickly flooded. When the vessel was beached the afterhold and engine-room were dry- Captain Burch adds that the fog belt seemed to settle some distance from Deal Island, which had all the appearances of the mainland.
Reports vary respecting the salvage. The Herald states the vessel is in a favorable position between boulders and dee£> water. The Telegraph says the vessel will be a total wreck. If south-easterly weather is experienced the steamer will bi;eak up.—U.P.A.
