The figures published show that steamers are being built in Australia for £3O per ton, whereas they can be purchased elsewhere from £0 to £l2. It is asserted that the Commonwealth Government lost over a million sterling last year on ship construction. THOUSANDS OF CHILDLESS FAMILIES. MELBOURNE, October 5.
