WOOL FREIGHTS.

REDUCTION OF gd PER LB. TO TAKE FORCE IMMEDIATELY The local agents of tho Commonwealth and Dminion Line, Messrs Williams and Kettle and the Gisborne Sheepfarmera Frozen Meat and Mercantile Co., (Mercantile Branch) have received telegraphic advice from the Wellington office of the company that an immediate reduction in wool freights has been announced. The new rates will be as follows: new rate old rate per lb. per lb. Greasy wool lid LiWScoured slipe wool ltd l^d In all cases plus 10 per cent, primage. The reduction amounts accordingly to §d per lb all round. .It will take effect for all wool shipped on the company’s steamer the Port Denison now loading in the Bay. * . Similar advice lias been received Uy the New Zealand Shipping Company, from its head office.*. The reduction will be welcome news to the sheepfarming community. On a good average weight bale weighing say 400 lbs the reduction will” represent 12s 6d per bale. Tills will more than pay for the cost of the woolpack together with port shipping charges including receiving into store, cartage, wharfage, lightering, etc. It is strongly felt that the' nett return to the grower must he improved by the reduction of intermediate charges and it is to be hoped that there will be a lowering of the beavv expenses at the London end. The cost of selling greasy wool in London has been to date approximately 2jd per lb from f.o.h. steamer Gisborne. This substantial freight reduction will bring the cost down to about 2-®d, which, however, is still almost double the pre-war expense. Tn conversation last evening with a Time.-’ representative, Mr. W. G. Fherratt, president of the. local Slieepownei's Federation. said he heard the news with extreme pleasure. and hoped that it would be tiie forerunner of a reduction of freights for frozen meat.
