WIRELESS PLANT.
MATTER MAY BE REVIVED BY HARBOR BOARD.
AN INTERESTING OFFER.
For some time past the Harbor Board has been considering a proposal to ■erect a wireless plant at Gisborne, and a special committee was set up to go into the matter. This committee reported to the last nesting of the Board, stating that, while recognising the advantages to be derived from the possession of a wireless plant, it was recommended that, in view of the quotations received, and the financial position of the Board, the question) of purchasing the plant should Ire held over. It was considered that the cost appeared too high for such a short distance plant. In view of this report, the Board decided that no action be taken in the meantime, and, consequently, appeared that the proposal would be permitted to drop indefinitely It is probable, however, thst the suggestion will again be brought forward as the result of the visit of the secretary or tlie'Board, Mr 11. A. Barton, to Wellington. While in the Empire City, Mr Barton was given a demonstration of an amateur wireless plant, the instrument being worked by an operator from an inter-colonial vessel then in port. The owner of the plant is himself an electrical engineer, and informed Mr Barton that he would be prepared to erect a similar plant for the Board at a comparatively small cost. A written offer it, it is understood, to be submitted to the Board, and the engineer is contemplating visiting Gisborne and demonstrating the plant to members of the Board, and also to any interested amateurs. The plant, Mr Barton stated, is apparently cheap and effected, being equipped for either sending or receiving messages. The sending range of the instrument is said to be quite sufficient for all me Board's requirements, while messages can be received from almost any distance.
