SHORTHORN BREEDERS. ANNUAL MEETING. CHRISTCHURCH, August io. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Shorthorn Cattle Breeders' Association, the name was changed to the Shorthorn Society of New Zealand. Officials were elected as follows: President, E. E. Alexander (Lincoln); vicepresident, A. Hunter (Hawera); council, W* G. Park (Te Awamutu), G. Stoddart (Lincoln), R. Miller (Whangarei), ,T. A. Johnstone (Dunedin). The, award of 14 shields for champion bulls during the coming season was allotted to tho following shows: Hamilton, Manawatu, Carterton, Gisborne, Napier. Whangarei, Wanganui, Christchurch, Ellesmere. Dunedin, Invercargill, Timaru, Ashburton and Gore. — P.A.
WHEAT FREIGHTS. LONDON, August 9. Australian wheat freights are firm. Several steamer fixtures have been made for September and October at 75. —A. and N.Z.C.A. I RIG PACKED FRUIT DEAL. LONDON, August 9. Mr Cox has sold the whole of the season’s pack of 75,000 cases of canned f-ruit at-prices which he says will repay the Federal Government’s guarantees and leave a substantial dividend for the growers.—A. and N.Z.C.A. MATAWHERO STOCK SALE. The weekly sale conducted by the Poverty Bay Stockbrokers’ Association was held at the Matawhero saleyards yesterday, in the presence of a small number of buyers. The yardings were: Fat sheep 558, fat cattle 1 only, pigs 36, store sheep 1864, store cattle 8, dairy cattle 73. The bidding was very slow, and there seomed to be a decrease generally in the demand for all classes of sheep. Pigs realised failprices, and anything of any quality in dairy stock sold well. There was no demand for fat sheep, only twen-ty-four being sold cut of tho whole yarding.
