LEAGUE OF NATIONS.
ATTACK ON BRITISH DELEGATES. MR SPEAKER CONDEMNS REMARKS. LONDON. Aug. 9. Mr Chamberlain indicated that Sir Russell Rodd, late Ambassador at Rome, would be the British delegate to the League of Nations Assembly. Lord Robert Cecil in the House of Commons, questioned the satisfactoriness of the’ British delegates to the League of Nations belonging to the purely official class. He declared that the Government’s action showed a profound contempt for the League. The Speaker condemned Lord Cecil’s remarks.—A. and N.Z.C.A.
SIR J. ALLEN MAY REPRESENT NEW ZEALAND. (Received Aug. 10, 10 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 10. Mr Massev states that Sir J. Allen will probably represent New Zealand at the League of Nations meeting.—A. and N.ZC.A. UNHAPPY HELIGOLAND. APPEAL FOR INDEPENDENCE (Received Aug. 10, 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 10. The Daily Chronicle’s Berlin cor respondent reports that the Heligolanders intend to appeal to the League of Nations for independence, They have memorialized the German public, stating that -the conditions were satisfactory until the British handed the islands over to Germany. Then they were unhappy. When the islanders returned after the armistice they found the eondi tions unliappier still. _ Their homes were spoiled and _ their industries ruined. New taxation was introduc ed and the German police and workmen had arrived importing chaos. —A. and N.Z.C.A.
