DEATH OE AN INFANT. NEED FOR CAR LICENSES. TIMARU, Aug. 9. At the inquest at Temuka yesterday into the death of the infant son, one mo-nth old, of Native parents named Rickus, it was stated that'the mother and another Maori woman were wheeling prams 6n one side of the main road', which was newly shingled in the middle. A car driven by a farmer’s wife, Mrs. S. Connolly, came along behind them. One mother turned out of the track to the right and Mrs. Rickus turned into the shingle. The car also turned that way, and, before it could be stopped, it struck the pram . broadside _ and threw the infant into the shingle, death following \ shortly after from concussion of the brain. The coroner’s finding recounted the facts and added a rider that car drivers should be licensed on proof of ability todrive. SAD MOTOR FATALITY. CHILD KILLED ON STREET. WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. Another motor fatality occurred in the city to-night. Benjamin Victor 13evan, son of Benjamin Bevan, of Guthrie Street, Thorndon, was knocked down by a motor car driven by Ainsley Bertram, a power’ mechanic. The child’s skull was fractured and he died fifteen minutes after the accident. The boy was playing on the pavement and suddenly ran to the street.—P. At the inquest at Temuka into the death of a rabbiter, the medical evidence was to the effect that in mixing strychnine poison once a week without precautions deceased absorbed enough in small doses to result in his death.
