Four building permits were issued during the past fortnight, comprising two additions valued at £196, and two dwellings valued at £lBlO. Rates totalling £2673 were collected by the Borough Council for the first week ended August 6, Last year’s rates totalled £38,000, of which £37,242 was collected. The number of employees of the Council during the past fortnight was 94, including 1 casual. Salaries and wages for the past two weeks amounted to £1022 18s lOd.
Eight cases of infections diseases were notified and investigated by the Borough during the month of July, comprising: Scarlet 'fever, 2 cases, puerperal fever 2, -chicken pox 1, spinal menignitis 1, pneumonia 1. Tramway returns for the fortnight ended July 30 are as follows: —Mileage 2458, car Hours 456, passengers 16,323. Owing to Nelson Bros.’ Freezing Works closing down, the car from the Post Office at 7 a.m. has been discontinued temporarily. On Saturdays, instead of. having four cars out, there are only three. ■ It was decided ;by the Borough Council last evening 11 fiat the Town Clerk should be authorised to bring under the notice of the Royal Humane Society the action of the men instrumental in saving life) at the wreck of the Huantui, and also the matter of one captain who lost his life when endeavoring to save others. When discussing the sanitary system of the Borough at the meeting of the Borongh Council last evening Cr Ball asked if there was any chance of planting trees on the Borough’s sanitary reserve. The Mayor informed Cr. Ball amid laughter, that if he wished to apply for a reserve he could have it! >
During the meeting of the Borough Council last night, Cr. Ball referred to tlfe position of the tramways. A loss of £2900, he said, was shown at the beginning of the year, blit the actual loss during the first four mouths of this year was £2300. He asked if the Tramway Committee could do anything in the matter. It was decided that the Tramway Committee should go into the subject and report at the next meeting.

A sequel to the recent fire'at His Majesty’s Theatre was the sale at auction, by Mi - G. K. Miller, .esterday, of the salvaged property on the theatre site. Bidding commenced at £IOO, and was advanced by two rises of £SO, and three more of £25 each. Two £lO bids followed, and then two £5 advances concluded the bidding. Finally the property was sold for £305 to Mr Bert Wiles, contractor. Last evening the Borough Council received an application from Mr E. A. Strong, lion, secretary of the Poverty Bay Primary Schools Sports’ Association, for the sole use of the Childer s Road reserve on September 22, on the occasion of the annual sports. On the suggestion of tho Mayor it was decided to refer the application«to the hockey and football authorities for favorable consideration. The Government Meteorologist reports that indications are for moderate to strong south winds giving place soon to increasing westerlies, especially in and southward of Cook Strait. The weather will probably be milder and fail; on the East Coast districts and expect increasing cloudiness. Another spell of rough westerly weather \ is likely to bo following shortly. No coal or oil was received during the fortnight. One hundred and four chains of cable were erected, principally in Te Hapara and ! new Whataupoko feeder. Five poles were also erected. ■ln his report to the Borough Council last evening, the engineer stated that during the past fortnight thirty-one applicants' had been given licenses to drive for hire, and two motor lorries, five public carts, and nine private carts were registered. Trading numbers were taken out by three .motor firms and twenty-two motor cars were re-registered as taxi cars; also licenses were issued to three bus proprietors for the ensuing year. Private drivers have been given certificates of ability to drive ; for eighteen motor cars, and three | motor cycles. ■■ The Cook County Council is now | planting the county reserve by the j Okitu Stream with a variety of trees. This reserve, which is about an acre in area, was given to the Council by the Cooper Estate, in. conjunction with the land required, for the bridge, one 1 of the conditions being that it should | lie planted. The Council intends to | make the reserve a picnic ground, and ! has already had it fenced and a numI her of the larger variety of trees ' planted. Officials of the Socii ety yesterday approached Mr R. | Thorne, representing the Allan Wilkie Shakespearean Company, to ascertain whether Mr Wilkie would contribute a percentage of one night’s takings to the funds of the society. Mr Thome stated that lie had every sympathy witli the project and has promised that be will favorably convey the suggestion to Mr. Wilkie. The Hospital Board’s lew on the Borough came up for consideration at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening on the reading of the following letter from the Board’s secretary, dated July 28: —“Since sendingyou the estimates for maintenance expenditure for the current year and the apportionment of levy' for your Council, the Board have revised the estimates and made several reductions in exI penditure. I have therefore to forward j you a copy of the estimates as revised. ■ j whereby it will be seen that there is a slight reduction in the apportionment of your Council, making the amj ount now £2,57!) 15s 6d. It would greatly facilitate if the first instalj ment could be paid as early as possi- | ble.” —The letter was received. j Enthusiasm, combined with praej tical work, has seen wonderful proi gress made with the children’s I paddling pool on the Waikanae Beach. Voluntary helpers have on numerous occasions put in hard work and now the site has been dug out and levelled and the overflow pipes have been put in. To-morrow afternoon a big working bee will be in full swing. A concrete mixer lias been secured, and also the services of an expert, so that much progress should he made with the concreting o’f the pool. The services of from 30 to 4.0 men are needed and an earnest appeal is. made to all who have the love of the beach or the interest of children at heart. Work will be commenced by the first party of helpers .at noon, though the majority will probably not start until aboiit 1.15 p.m. r Wie work will then he- continued until dark.
