PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL.
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION
Ccrtainlv one of the brightest | evenings passed off last Thursday 21, ' when the ladies of Motu and Motuhora gave a return ball to the bachelors.' The hall was beautifully decorated with a trailed ceiling of lycopodium, with drooping . hangers of violet and yellow and reflects great credit on Miss Harding, who had charge of the decorating. The supper room looked rosy in red and green, . with holly berries and foliage on the tables, which' were laden with the j daintiest and best of suppers. There were quite a number of fancy costumes worn, which showed out well among the. many pretty evening dresses—Mrs Scholium as France ; Mrs Fyke, Gipsy; Mrs Quirk, Sport; Mrs Tarr/ Winter; Mrs Amies, Suffragette; Mrs R. Fisher, Hockey; Mrs Comer, America; Miss Harding, Vanity; Miss Gaultou, Eastern Lady; Miss Dumpily, Belgium ; Miss Read, Red Cross Nurse; Miss Hooper, Japanese; Miss Hewitt,' French dancing girl ; Miss M. Gray, Daughter of the Regiment; Miss Clark, Flirt; Miss Donaldson, Body Guard; Miss E. Haydon, Jazz; Miss McLean, Japanese; and many others whose names were not available, one especially looking very nice as Billiards. The. most noted among: the gentlemen were Mr J. Scholium, Romeo; Mr R. Thomas, Chinaman; Mr McFadgean, Robinson Crusoe; i\lr T Scholium, Moor; Mr Graham, Lady- of the Bath; etc. Mr McMullen (piano) and Mr J. The arrangements were good, and the ladies are to be congratulated on their splendid success. —Correspond ent.
