RIFLE SHOOTING.

IMPERIAL CHALLENGE SHIELD

LOCAL CADETS' SCORES

For some time past the local Senior Cadet shooting teams have been firing .in the Imperial Challenge Shield competition, and the results of their efforts are now completed. The Shield, which is competed for annually, arouses much interest, and many hundred reams, from all parte of the Empire, participate. This year eighteen local teams, fired in the competition, compared with only a few teams last year. The shooting of these teams on the average was very fair, and in some cases the performances excellent, and such as should ensure the competitors being well placed on the list when the results are announced. The shooting of the High School teams, in particular, is highly creditable. The leading team, the members of which were on an average under 151 years of age, put up a total score of 673, or 84.1 per cent, of the possible. The shooting of this team was noticeably consistent, the lowest score being 75. The othe two High School senior teams averaged 80.7 and 75.5, while two of the iunior teams also averaged over <O. In the senior competitions the Waerenga-a-hika native College team also shot well, averaging 76.6. It should be pointed out that the High School teams were shooting with light rifles fitted with aperture sights, and thus fired under better conditions than the other cadets. Had the best eight High School shots been in one team they wonld have averaged -nearly 90, an excellent performance, which proves that this school is not behind others in marksmanship. The detailed results of each team areas follow: —

TURF „ TRAINING NOTES. With only two days to go before the meeting it was naturally expected there would be a large attendance on the course yesterday morning and this proved to be the case. The day was fine, and there were fully 150 spectators and a very large number of horses. At times the scene resembeld a miniature race meeting. Judging; by the interest displayed it is apparent that it needs only fine weather to make the steeplechase meeting of the G.R.C. a record one in every respect. Patetonga who is looking well, did good useful work. Steepholm covered G furlongs in 1.22. Ahura performed nicely. Scotch Mixture covered a fast 3 furlongs on the plough. W. Turnbull’s team, including Kingley, Actifid and Crosswords worked before breakfast.

Monte joined W. Howard’s team, Multifual, Cleft and Sweet-Corn, for a 5 furlong sprint, which was covered by Sweet Cora and Cleft in 1.4, the former easily holding the Maltster mare in hand. Monte’s performance was quite satisfactory. Black Lace had slightly the better of Sunray in a 6 furlong gallop covered in 1.19. Ginger Mick beat General Carrington over 6 furlongs in 1.20. Prince Willonyx and Bright Light set off together on a 6 furlong gallop, the former winning easily in 1.20. Sign and Eeparoa jumped three fences.

Juan did once ‘round on the grass. Martini and Chaplin did slow work. A large number of horses also worked' at Makaraka. This morning the final gallops will take place and tno doubt there will be a large attendance of spectators anxious to ascertain the form of their favorites before the eventful day arrives. Last evening the Tangaroa left Napier with ten or eleven horses on board. The Arahura arriving from Auckland this evening will bring a large number of “sports” from the North to participate in the coming meeting.
