SUCCESSFUL GATHERING AT RESERVE. TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR. CUTS PROGRAMME SHORT. SPOUT'S TO BE CONTINUED TO-MORROW. Wliat proved to be in all other respects a highly successful juvenile sports meeting, held at the Childers Road Reserve yesterday, was marred towards the close by a torrential downpour, which necessitated the postponement of any further contests until to-morrow morning, when admission to the ground will be free. Commencing at 9.30 a.m.. events were enthusiastically contested throughout the day by numbers of young competitors from the pr.mary schools of the district, including many children from the Te Arai, Patutahi, Waerenga-a-hika, and other country schools. Due in a large measure to the energetic efforts of the officials and teachers and helpers generally, there was not a slack moment, all day, and only a downpour of exceptional severity precluded an equally successful conclusion to the function. After some 25 minutes of steady rain, however, the ground was in many places covered with two inches of water, and the finals of several competitions, as well as the hockey match High School v. a combined team, which had commenced, and the races to be run under the auspices of the Harriers' Club, had to be postponed. The following were the officials in charge of proceedings Secretary. Air. E. W. Strong; chairman. Air L. J. Plank; vice-chairman. Air. O. R. Olsen; starter, Air. R. H. Clark; judges, Messrs. G. Crawshaw. G. E. Ashton, 0. Wildish, J. Kinder, W. Howard, AY. Clarkson; referees, assistant teachers. The thanks of the committee are due to Air. G. Smith for supplying timber, and to Air. C .E. Bickford for assistance at. the gate. Catering arrangements were in the hands of Air Findlay, and dinner was served in the training shed, whilst a soft drinks and cuke stall situated just outside the door did a “roaring” trade with thirsty and hungry juveniles.
