BOXING.

DR. SCOTT AS INSTRUCTOR

YOUNG ENTHUSIASTS LEARN THE LEFT LEAD.

The movement initiated by Dr. Scott to teach the youths of Gisborne in the art of self-defence was carried a stage further in the training rooms last evening. There was an attendance of 34 pupils, many of whom were- well-developed lads, the majority being on the vorge of manhood. ’ Throughout .the. evening, Dr. Scott received invaluable assistance from Messrs A 7. Rnsor and Cliff Church.

The- lads wore first ranged into three* squads, according to ago and general development—l 4 allotted! to A class. 6 to B class, and 14 to C class. In opening, Dr. Scott questioned the pupils -on the- lessons learned during his two previous lessons, and the ready answers gave ample proof of the. interest the lads took in the subject.' Th.e pupils were- then paired off in two lines facing each other and in succession wore -shown the general poise of the;, body, position of tlie feet, poise of the body on the foot, the attack and retreat (foot movements), left lead, for the bead (standing and on the move), and the block for the left lead of (the head. The’various movements were executed with much enthusiasm. One side did the loading and the other side the blocking. Then the positions were reversed. Nine o’clock arrived and the lesson was concluded all too soon ■for the 3'oipig enthusiasts, mans' of whom remained in the rooms for some time longer and with the gloves on practised the lessons learned during the evening. The classes will be continued „ 'next Thursday from 8 to 9 r-m. ’
