TRIALS AT PARK RACECOURSE.

YEARLINGS AND MAIDENS

A large, number of racing enfcluisia.sits visited the Park Racecourse yesterday afternoon to witness the trials of yearlings and other maiden performers with the colors up. Considerable interest was manifested in the trials, and the riders themselves were as keen ait the post as if engaged in an event for which the stake was £SOO. The first event was a two-lurlong flutter for yearlings. Somo of the ‘‘babies” did not appear to take too kindly to their initiation to the racing arena, but, taken all-round, their behaviour’ was fairly good, and in fact several lined up at'the barrier like old stagers. Mr C. Morse’s Phalli, ridden bv Pereival, jumped •away smartly and soon established a lead of several lengths, which he maintained t 0 the finish. Unalii, who is owned by Mr 0. Morse, is a stylish looking ’ colt by Mountain Knight-Ikaroa. Mr K. S. ’Williams’ colt by Fort William-Osterland (Nixon) was second, whilst a Merry Moments colt owned by Mr Lawrie and ridden by H. Olive, was third. No time was taken. The next trial was a 3-furlong gallop for maiden performers, two and three years old. After an interesting race, Prowler (H. Olivo) got home by a bead from Ahura (R. Foote) with Anxious Moments (P. Sinclair) half a length away third. Prowler is a 3-year-old bay gelding by GoodnightTigerine, and is owned by Mr. AV. Olive. Ahura, who is owned by Mr George Murray, is a two-year old filly by Merry Moments out of Mahana. Anxious Moments is a Merry Moments. gelding owned by"' Mr AY. Turnbull. An animal which was the object of considerable comment in connection with this event was a 3-year old brown gelding .belonging to Mr AV. Howard, called Our Navy, by Our King-Josie. Our Navy, who was ridden by Stuart Howard, stands just on IS bands high, and is one of rbe biggest horses in New Zealand. It is apparent thaf lie requires plenty of work and will probably not be in evidence for another 12 months, although it was noticed that, despite a poor .start, lie was running on well at the finish, having improved his position cousidorabl\ T -over the last furlong. The big horse also schooled over hurdles and shaped very creditably.

The. trials concluded with another two-furlong spin for yearlings, the field being made up of the samo performers as that which competed 111 the first- event. Unabi (Pereival) straight looked all over a winner. About half a furlong from home, however, Mr D. J. Barry’s Heather Mix-ture-Edna May 11. colt, ridden by Tautau, came with a great rattle, and finishing with great determination, defeated Unahi I)3' a bead. Mr G. B. Oman made an efficient starter.
