BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY AIEETING

The Borough Council met on Tuesday evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr G. Wildish) and Crs. H. De Costa, J. Mouat,. J. H. Kane, H. E. Hill, T. G. Lawless, D. W. •Coleman, I. Mirfield, and R. Robertson. >Gr. Ashiton was granted leave or absence. The Poverty Bay Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union wrote thanking the Council for reducing the fee for tlie hire of the Reserve for the championship chopping events. —The letter was received. A request that a policy he framed by the Government, in connection with influx of alien Asiatic immigrants, was contained in a circular letter received from the Eltlinm Borough Council. Cr. Coleman, moved that the request be supported. Or. Mouat seconded the mbtio)n.. and said that the laws for white immigrants should be relaxed, and: those for Asiatics made more rigid. Cr. DeCosta said that lie had frequently been asked why the Council allowed these people to sell in the streets, without paying .rent. —The morti|on was carried.

Tho tramway returns for the past fortnight were submitted as follows: Mileage 2504, passengers 16638, revenue £IBB 16s 9d, traffic expenses £7B 16s 4d, rolling stock maintenance £4 11s 9d, power expenses £25 8s 4d‘. At a meeting of the tramways committee the Mayor had submitted a statement showing car miles, passengers carried, and revenue and traffic expenses in connection with the running of the trams for the past eighteen months. Since the increase of fares the revenue was showing an improvement. Tho committee also recommended that now that Mr Leech’s position as tramway manager had he,on made permanent, he should be paid’ at the rate of £6 per week, and also that a telephone he provided at Ills house.—The report was adopted. The Union Bank of Australia forwarded plans and specifications of the proposed extension of the verandah in front of its premises " in Gisborne.—-The,Mayor said that the proposed extension of the verandah w.iith posts was not in accordance with the by-laws.—The matter was referred to the building inspector. The Auckland' Railways and Development League asked that a small annual assessment he made by local bodies to give the League an organised effort in watching disitr-ict -interests.—The letter was received.
