RUGBY FOOTBALL.

RrHURNED soldiers v. poverty BAY. NOTES ON THE GAAIE. Although there was nothing larly brilliant about the match played between the Returned Soldiers and a team representing Poverty Bay. at the Childers road reserve, on Alonday last, the game was strenuous enough in all conscience. ' The soldiers dominated the play throughout and never at any time" did their opponents look like winning. It must be said, however, that the luck of the game was not on the side of the losers, so far as the weather conditions were concerned, for when called upon to play against The wind in the second half the breeze freshened up considerably, and made finding the line to advantage a difficult matter. There was little cohesion amongst the backs on either side, but the Returned Soldiers were certainly superior to their opponents in this department ox the game, and might have considerably increased their score had Pollock taken advantage of numerous excellent opportunities of getting bis fellow-backs going instead of continually kicking out of bounds. For the winners, the two brothers Chrisp played sterling games, each giving an excellent display of threequarter play. 11. Chrisp’s. two tries were the result of splendid efforts, whilst .T. Chrisp’s field goal from just inside half-way was a gem. The forwards as a whole played well, but 11. Langlands was undoubtedly the star of that department. For the losers, too much cannot Ire said jn praise of the splendid display of AT. Langlands at full back, his handling and line kicking being a treat to witness. Rundleby. though not quite up to his usual form, played very sound in defence. Kingi. at centre, also gave a creditable display. Carson, 'in the forwards, also showed good form.
