HAWKE’S BAY BACKS. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. P,y Telegraph—Special Correspondent. NAPIER. April 27. At Napier to-night the Hawke’s Bay races is not the sole topic of conversation. The sport is hardly discussed, Hie railway strike and its consequences being mostly talked of. Big fields, however, will be seen out in all the' c veids. Class is not well represented in the Hurdles, and if Kohu faces the starter the chestnut should be a warm favorite. Explorer looks off color, and Zeus will he troubled in get the distance. There is a big field in the Longlands Welter, but they are a poor lot. Cashmere has shown winning form of late, and Pavilion can also get the distance well. Of those engaged in the Nursery Handicap nothing has shown such good form as Chrysostom, and the black colt should carry most money on the machine. There will he five runners in the Hawke’s Bav Stakes, viz.. Hymestra, Golden Bubble, Silver Link, Humbug, and Demand. Humbug has been giving his trainer trouble with one of his feet. Silver Link will be a good favorite, hut it is expected that she wilt be well tested by Golden Bubble, who lias escaped any penalties and is in receipt of lolbs from the Taranaki j mare. . , j There are thirteen acceptors in tne j Cup. but only the four top weights are enquired for and the others will probably he neglected on the machine. Sasanof may he the best favorite, but there will be strong support for Vagabond. and the issue may lie between the pair. The acceptors in the Poukawa Handicap number nineteen, and they are a fairly even lot. Asterina raced well at Waipuknrau and saw out six furlongs well. A likely one amongst the i others is Mosthenes. who shaped well on each day at Trentham. The two top weights should be in the market for the Autumn Handicap, and in the concluding event Parisian Diamond. Katana, and the light-weight Ladv "Ball read the best.
