A. railway employee at present ~n a visit to Gisborne from another centre is credited with having stated that he knew of a driver at Waipukurau who had received a telegram to this 'effect. EXPLANATION BY THE PREMIER. - Presfi Association Telegram, i AUCKLAND April 23. | Tho Premier, explaining the GovVniment’s offer to the railwavmen, savs: “Bv wav of explanation in regard to the official letter forwarded from the Government to the railway societies, I may point out that wo I commenced with a basic wage for married men not in any way incapacitated, of £lB7 16s per annum; that is, I2s per day. To that has boon added payment at the rate of £ls per annum for married men in the terms of .Judge Stringer-'s recommendation. To this the Government has added a payment of £7 lOs to single, men, both taking effect on Ist .January last. Tho proposal now is that Judge Stringer’s recomnienda- . Lion shoahl continue until Ist June, ; instead of being reviewed again inSeptember, as recommended by him.
