Prohibition in America. DRUG ADDICTS ESTIMATED AT ALREADY OVER 1,000,000. Reprinted from the National Prohibition Campaign Committee’s Rand Rook, 1919 (page 29): , “PROHIBITION AND THE DRUG HABIT. Extracts from Report of Special Investigating Committee, appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury at Washington, U.S.A. March 25, 1918. The Committee which made the investigation consisted of Congressman JE. F. Rainey, of Illinois; Professor Reed >S. Hunt, Harvard University; Deputy Commissioner D. C. Keith, Internal Revenue Bureau; and Dr. U. C. Dumesa, United States Public Health Service. ‘‘The number of addicts reportedjto the health officers replying to a /questionnaire was 10f,877. As this number represent/ the addicts repoYted/Jiy only 26 per cent, of the health/officials from which /ElnS*4nformation was requested, we that had all the,, health officials replied, tofal number yvould have amounted to approximately 42#,000. This f number, however, appears to too/low in view of the fact that the physicans of the conn try are estimated to have had about 237,000 addicts" under treatment during the same period and cAlj a small portion of the total number of addicts present themselves for treatment- Addicts of the underworld, for instance, secure most of their supply through illicit channels, and rarely, if ever consult a physician. “In reply to questionnaires sent to health officers of state, county, and municipalities, the Health Commissioner of New York city reported a total of I(J3,UUU addicts which is equivalent to 1.8 per cent, of the population. On this basis there would be 1,908,000 addicts in the United States. Information in the hands of the committee indicates that drug addiction is less prevalent m rural districts than in cities or in congested centres. _ Taking these figures into consideration the Committee is of opinion that the total number of drug addicts m this country exceeds one million at the present time. 1 ” ELECTORS l If you wish to help in preventing the growth of the dreadful drug-taking habit in New Zealand STRIKE OUT THE TWO BOTTOM LINES [Please show this to your friends.] „
