THE KING-MAKER
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —The present, election contest is affording the public a more than usual amount of interest and amusement, and when Mr Lysnar proceeds to unfold the history of the past he claims the attention of all who have a regard for accuracy and reliability. During his Wairoa speech, according to your report, Mr Lysnar discloses that he has beeu emulating the Earl of Warwick, and indulged in the pastime of Kingmaking. Not only has Sir James Carroll to thank Mr Lysnar for any political eminence he may have achieved in the past, but apparently the Mayors of Gisborne since his regime. Messrs Kirk, Slierratt and Wildish, have the satisfaction of knowing that he has exalted them to that position and dethroned them when they had served his purpose. If you do not accept Mr Lysnar’s version and question liis veracity, as it has been so often questioned with effect before, you must marvel at the sublime egotism and vanity of a man who can calmly make such statements to an audience, forgetful of the fact that he cannot point to one solitary instance in his public career where he has successfully initiated any proposal which has been a proved success with the exception of the promotion of the Poverty Bay Farmers’ Meat Co., for which he cannot .claim the entire credit. Let Mr Lysnar and his admirers carefully examine and analyse past history if they wish, let them go back to the very first occasion that ho came under the notice of the public, let them follow his history until lie achieved the Mayoral chair, and ask themselves whether they are proud ot it. Let them then pursue the course of his career'as Mayor, consider his Mayoral policy, and point to one of his proposals as contained therein, winch had not to be entirelv remodelled before it could be adopted. Search the records obtain historical accuracy, and then sta e whether any man can be proudl of i Tvsnar and his career as a public cm Jen of Gisborne. Noise he has made point to more than noise.—l am, your etc " THE ETTRICK SHEPHERD.
