PROBLEM OF HUNGARY

OCCUPATION OF BUDAPEST.

HIGH-HANDED ACTION BY ROUMANIA.

REFUSAL TO OBEY ALLIED COMMISSION’S REQUEST.

SUPREME COUNCIL TAKES

ACTION

United Press Association--Copyright. Reuter's Telegram. (Received Aug. 10, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS, Aug. 8. Tile Roumanian troops have crossed the Danube and 'occupied the whole of Budapest. Owing to the expiry of the period fixed for the acceptance of the armistice, the Supreme Council not only refused to recognise the Roumanians’ right to impose fresh terms, but held that the exaction of reparations and indemnities was vested in all the Allies.

BERLIN, Aug. 8. The Tageblatt’s Budapest correspondent states that the American Government requested the Roumanian command to withdraw the -armistice conditions, threatening the stoppage of supplies to Roumania.

Vienna; Aug.'s? 3 The newspaper Die Zeit states that the Hungarian Ambassador fled to Vienna after burning secret documents. Hungarian journalists and officers subsequently went to the Embassy and thrashed and ejected the staff. Enormous and enthusiastic crowds demonstrated all night long before the hotel in Budapest, where the new Ministers are staying. The citv remains orderly. German correspondents at Budapest state that the Hungarian peasants are wreaking vengeance on the Bolsheviks, whose leaders in many communities were publicly beaten to death.

Reuter’s Telegram. (Received Aug. 10, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS, Aug. 8. It is learned that the Roumanian generals refused to obey the Allied Commission’s request to stay their hand and permitted pillaging. They established a blockade which is reducing Budapest to starvation. They destroyed railways between Budapest and Vienna and committed other violations of the rights of the Allies, even of humanity. The Council’s telegram to Roumania requests the Government immediately to demonstrate by their acts that the inference of the Council that Roumania is resolved to disregard ite authority and' separate herself from the Allies is mistaken.

United Press Association —CoDyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. (Received August 10, 11.5 p.m.) PARIS, August 8. The Supreme Council has addressed a sharp Note to Roumania. owing to herl refusal to receive the Allied military mission at Budapest. PARIS. August 8. The Supreme Council has disavowed the Roumanian ultimatum to Hungary, and requests Misu, the Roumanian delegate, to inform the Government that the Council expressly refuses to recognise any armistice terms outside those already settled in Paris.

HOOVER TAKES PROMPT MEASURES. FOOD SUPPLIES TO BUDAPEST STOPPED. Reuter’s Telegranu (Received Aug. 10, 5.5 jp.m.) PARIS, Aug. 8. Mr. Hoover, who is directing relief work in Hungary, ordered the suspension of all consignments of food to Budapest, on the ground that the Roumanians are seizing food. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received Aug. 10, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 8. There is an unconfirmed report from Vienna that America, threatens to stop the export of food to Roumania unless the severity of the terms of the armistice with Hungary are modified.

AN OPTIMISTIC REPORT

SITUATION LIKELY TO CLEAR

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association (Received August 9, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 6.

The Australian Press Association learns that the situation in Middle Europe is likely to clear up following the Roumanian occupation at Budapest, where Roumanian soldiers without arms are patrolling the streets. There are no disturbances. (Received August 10, 5.5 p.m) LONDON, August 6. Mr. Bonar Law said that the Go-’ vernment had decided to raise the blockade on Hungary. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, Aug. 6.

(Received August 10. 5.5 p.m.) The Daily Telegraph’s Paris correspondent states that there is the gravest apprehension in Peace Conference circles as to the Roumanian situation. The Anglo-American delegates particularly realise that the Allied-"cause is. likely to suffer if Roumania continues to act m defiance of the Peace Conference tions. It is unlikely that Czechoslovakia, Serbia and Italy will acquiesce in Roumania’s demands. Roumanian defiance is having far-reach-ing effects abroad, and has revived the hopes of Turkish insurgents in the Committee of Union and P r0 * gress. It has similarly strengthened the resistance of Von der Goltz, who flatly declines to obey the Allied plans and evacuate the Baltic provinces by August 20.
