STATEMENT BY LORD CHAN-
CELLOR
GOVERNMENT RECOGNISES IT MUST SOON DISCUSS POSITION.
United Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. Julv 3d, 8.10 p.m.) LONDON, July 15. In the House of Lords Lord Birkenhead, Lord Chancellor, admitted the necessity for declaring an Irish policy at ail early date. The Government agreed that something must lie done beeaii.se? the existing Home Rule Act came automatically into operation six months after the war ended.. He believed that not a dozen Irish constituencies now wanted it in its present form. The Government recognised that it must soon discuss the problem and reach a decision, but it had already stated that it would not sacrifice its friends to Britain’s confessed enemies. Neither I Ister nor tbe Sinn Feiners would accept dominion home rule, shorn of control over the army and navy. Personally he could say he bad little hope of a happy issue until law and order were restored.
