Australian and N.Z. Cable Association (Received June 4, 9.10 p.m.) SIMLA, June 2. A certified copy of the Amir’s orders to the commander of the Afghan eastern army, and presumably to other commanders, states that—- “ According to information received from the Government ,of In-
dia, fighting had occurred owing to some misunderstanding. The Government, therefore, was ordering commanders to suspend hostilities until the door of communication was opened. As we had no intention of fighting with this old friend of ouiA and were obliged to take defensive measures, and now that he also desires peace, we order and command you to keep back your regular troops and tribes for whom we are responsible and await further orders.” The letter adds:—
‘ ‘You should, however, keep in view defensive • and offensive operations while awaiting the result of the discussion between the Indian and Afghan Governments.” The order is dated May 29.
