5000 DEATHS IN SOUTH AFRICA. PRECAUTIONS IN AUSTRALIA. Eeuter’s Telegrams. CAPETOWN, Oct. 14. An official message states that the .approximate deaths at Capetown and chief suburbs to October 13th totalled 5000, 75 per cent, being colored and natives. Australian and N.Z, Cable Assooiatiofc MELBOURNE, Oct. 15. Passengers arriving from South Africa suffering from influenza will in future be quarantined. The Commonwealth is taking steps to produce vaccine to check the disease. WELLINGTON. Oct. 15. Regarding the cable message as to the influenza, the Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister for Public Health, said that probably Australia’s action was being taken with a view to dealing with vessels arriving from Capetown, where the epidemic appeared to have taken a most, violent form, particularly among the native population. In the event of vessels arriving in New Zealand from Cape ports every care would be taken to protect the health of the people here.
