“ OUR DAY.”

THE MEN’S PART. TOWN AND DISTRICT TO BE CANVASSED. A mooting of men interested in tlie ‘‘Our Day,” movement was lield at tlie Borough Council Chambers yesterday morning to consider what arrangements should be made in connection with the collection. The Mayor (Mr W. G. Sherratt) presided and there were also present : Messrs J. B. Kells, G. J. Black, H. Kenway, C. M. Luke, A. Varney, E. J. F. King, E. Adair, PI. deCosta, E. T. Doddrell. Mr Kenway mentioned that the ladies’ organisation was-now complete. The Mayor said that a personal canvass should be made. Tologa Bay already had raised £I2OO and it would probably amount to £1,400. Mr Black: The town wants shaking up; the country lias been carrying the baby nil along. The Mayor said he hoped there would bo no question town versus country. Mr Black: The farmers have been carrying the burden. Mr Luke said he agreed that a personal canvass would be the best method. Mr Kells suggested that jirobably the recent success of the Allies would have the effect of causing people to think that, probably the war would soon be over and that there would be no necessity to contribute to any great extent. The Mayor and other Speakers voiced the opinion that the fighting would be still fiercer and the money would be required more than ever. Mr Doddrell mentioned that in London Harrod’s store had given 10 per cent, of their takings for several days. Th e goods were sold by society ladies and as a result of the effort a considerable amount had been received in aid of the Red Cross. He suggested that perhaps the ladies would undertake to act similarly in respect to Gisborne. Mr Kenway mentioned that the ladies had already completed their arrangements. It was decided, on the suggestion of Mr Black, to ask the Returned Soldiers’ Association to organise a mock court. The following Committee was ap-. pointed to personally visit various business houses: Messrs G. Stock (lawyers). J. W. Bright (merchants), E. T. Doddrell (drapers and mercers), IT. deCosta (all other trades), E. Mountford (Banks), D. J. Barry (hotels). All present were appointed a committee with the addition of Messrs G. Stock, J. W.
