Mr. F. J. Williams, of Waipare, arrived by the Arahura from Tokomaru Bay last night.
Constable F. Gribben commenced his duties in Gisborne last week, vn place of Constable Nash.
Mr. Stanley Clare left last evening per Avahurs on •«, short visit to Invercargill.
Mr. M. C. Walker, of Messrs. C. Aickin and Soy, Ltd., was one of tho passengers on the Arahura from Auckland last night. Captain L. Miles, Deputy Director of Recruiting, who has been in Gisborne on departmental business since Thursday, left by the Arahura for Wellington last night. The death is announced of Mr. H. G. Price, late Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor at Blenheim, states a Press Association message. Mr. J. Mount arrived from Tokomaru Bay by the Arahura last night, and will spend a short time in town before returning to complete his business at Tokomarn Bay. Private Wm. P. Leggett, son of Mr. W. Leggett, of Waiohika, arrived by the Arahura last night from Auckland. He left with the 30th Reinforcements, and was invalided home from England. Private W. F. Forrester arrived from Auckland last night on a visit to his mother, Mrs. John Forrester. Private Forrester left with the Main Body, returning at the end of last year. Sister Irene Cox left by the Araluira last night to join a hospital ship. She has been in Gisborne on furlough for a short spell, after having served on a hospital ship and in France.
Mr. J. D. Cairns, editor of the Mataura Ensign for the past ten years, died unexpectedly yesterday morning from pleurisy supervening on influenza, states a Press .Association message.
In a hospital and progress report just issued by the military authorities Sergeant G. W. Clarke (Gisborne), Private A. T. Moss (Gisborne) and Private R. F. R. Watkins are reported not severe cases.
Mr O. M. Luke, chairman of the Y.M.C.A. Committee, Mr. A. Varney, national secretary of the Y.M.C.A., and Mr. F. J. F. King, district secretary of the Poverty Bay and Hawke’s Bay districts, arrived in Gisborne last evening, after an overland trip from Hastings, to assist the local Red Cross Committee with, their “Our Day" effort. Tho visitors left Hastings at 9 o’clock on Saturday morning, and report the roads generally to bo in good order.
