THE HAIRDRESSERS’ DISPUTE.

!To the Editor.! Sir, —I should be extremely glad if yon will allow me. space in your valuable paper explaining the at, titude of the hairdresseeg’ assistants re-early.closing. Now, Sir, no doubt tile public of Gisborne will agree generally, and fall in with our ultimatum, as so jocularly explained in the Times of yesterday’s, issue, and can assure your readers' this matter is not a joke from the assistants’ point of view, but a sincere demand by us for improved working conditions. I would like to'point out that we are living in an advanced age, antiquated ideas being against the rule of progress, and as the wheels of time revolve the position of the individual becomes keener in support of any matter to improve tile aims concerning each individual -worker. So, therefore, I ask those in opposition to the early closing scheme in discussion,. to explain in your coin funs why. I ask is the position of hairdresser and tobacconist of more importance to the community than, for instance, chemists, butchers, bakers etc.? In fact, take any class of business you wish, and I venture to say you will find none such slaves to it as we have been to ours —lienee our demand. In conclusion, I think it only fair to say that those employers in support of the movement are to be heartily appreciated in their efforts, and we assistants thank them accordingly, their names being Messrs Wise, Sutton, Earle, Lucas, Owen and Fletcher. Now, Sir. lam sure the public of Gisborne will support them in their further efforts to bring about a settlement of early closing. I am. etc.. ARTHUR STUBBINGS.
