PROJECT TO FOUND SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THEIR CHILDREN.

WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. A representative influential deputation waited on the Hon. Mr Herries, Minister for Railways, and the Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald, Acting-Post-master General, in connection with a project for raisng £IOO,OOO to found scholarships for children of New Zealand sailors and soldiers killed in the war.
The object of the deputation was to inform ministers that a fund had recently been inaugurated at Trentham camp with the aim of providing scholarships for children of New Zealand soldiers and sailors who had made the supreme sacrifice. MajorGeneral Robin, Colonel Potter and Dr Anderson (Director of Education were appointed trustees of the fund. Substantial donations have been obtained towards a big art union. Application was then made to the Minister for Internal Affairs to hold a raffle, but as the scope of the movement had grown so much, and they thought of making it a Dominion fund, the Minister had asked the promoters to set up a strong supervising committee to control the art union.
The Minister lias given the necessary license to proceed with the art union. To each district will he sent bayonet fighters and the Trentham band to let the people see what is being done at Trentham in th e way of training soldiers. Free railway passes and postal facilities were asked for. Mr MacDonald and Mr Herries in replying, said the matter would go before Cabinet and receive every possible consideration.
