PACIFIC MONROE DOGTRINE.
GERMANY MUST BE WARNED OFF. SENATOR SAULSBURY’S RESOLUTION. Australian and N.2t Cable ■ ( WASHINGTON, July 8. Great interest is ■ taken in Mr Saulsbury’s resolution regarding the future of the Pacific. Congressmen regaid it- as the first step to the active co-operation of America and Australia towards carrying out Mr Hughes’ suggestion of a Monroe doctrine for the Pacific. Several Senators favour the resolution. Mr Saulsbury, interivewed by a representative of the Australian Press Association, said: “I approve of Mr Hughes’ policy, under which the Central Powers would be told to keep their hands off the Southern Pacific. Under my resolution. Australia would control the Southern Pacific Islands, in conjunction with Britain, thus preventing the possibility of Germany establishing submarine or naval bases on any island there.
“We must remember it is possible that Germany may overrun Holland before the war ends. _What- tnen would be the position of Holland's Pacific possessions r Concerted action by Britain, the United •'Mates, and Japan will prevent Geranin- securing control of any Pacific Islands. "Mv resolution means that modern piracy must be excluded from the Pacific, and. not only from participation in Pacific trade, until (yQZ~ many’s people show that they uav»renouneed militarism. . The action which I propose is of the greatest importance to Australia- It mean the removal of the menace or Gem man occupation of any part or New Guinea. We must see that Germany L not allowed to establish a naya! base in that, or any other Paciac Islands otherwise Australia. wo.-ld be compelled to adopt protective measures which fould entail r. heavier financial burden tnan •* population of five millions would be able to bear. My aim is to k«£ Germany out of the Pacino e \| r Saulsbwy. who is president pro tern of the Senate is. hopetul -be resolution will be passed.
