ILLINOIS RIVER DISASTER
United Press Association -Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Oabi. Association NEW YORK, July 8. The Illinois river excursion steamer Columbia had 663 passengers and thirty of a crew, when she capsized. It is estimated that seventy-five to one hundred persons perished. The accident occurred m a dense fog. The vessel struck a sunken log in the river and commenced to sink immediately; then capsized She was a three-decker vessel. The excursionists were dancing and singing when the accident occurred. A name ensued. Many women and children were pushed overboard • and many jumped. There was no time to use lifebelts or boats. The shrieks of the survivors were heard on the shore. Row boats were launched and wont to the rescue. DEATH ROLL GROWING. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association (Received July 9, 8 p.m.) NEW YORK. July 8.
