TOLOG A PAY NOTES.

(From Oar Own correspondent.)

TOLOGA BAY, June 24. a dance in honor of Private "Well-, wood Reeves, who has been invcidided: home, was held in Reynolds Hall on Thursday evening last. The floor was in excellent oendition. Dance music wais capably supplied by Mesdames C'olebrook, 'Henley, Miss Spences, Messrs Lockwood Bros., and~S. Noanoa- Mr A. Parkes, in a neat speech on behalf of township and country, welcomed Private Reeves home agina. , A dainty supper was handed round by the members oh the Patriotic Committee. FOOTBALL. . COUNTRY.v. HAUITI. (By “Critic.”) TOLOGA BAY. June 24. The third and final match in the first round l of the teariis competition for the J'amieson Cup wasvplayed on the Domain, under the auspices of the Tologa Bay Football Club ’on June 22, and resulted in a win for Hauiti by IS points to nil. The’ game was an improvement on the previous games played, and it is hoped that future games will show a fast, open, clean and unselfish combination of play. In 'summarising the players individually there appears to be a great lack of knowledge of the rules of the game, and both -forwards and backs indulge'in' too much indiscriminate kicking of the ball. The former should try and “dribble” the ball when getting on a forward rush in the open, and in F-e ruck or forward tight work, work the ha]] out to half hack with the feet, and still at the same time hold the weight -of the opposing pack. The litter should try and use better judgment with their kicks to touch or line, and when in their opponents’ twenty-live keep an ear open for a call for a kick to centre. and thereby both forwards and hacks would give the game some semblance of a game of Rugby football. - The passing of the back's, at present, leaves”' much to ba. desired, the tendency being to pass too late, which on one point, causes the player about to receive the ball to overrun the passer, and thereby be olaced off-side, a very serious matter for liis team sometimes. Persevering practice in the respective arts of the game would of a surety conduce to a higher standard of play than has been represented. On the whole the best team certainly won. Mr J. W. Somervell controlled the game in a satisfactory- manner.
