CITIZENS’ DEFENCE COMMITTEE.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING
A meeting of the Gisborne Defence Committee was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs, Fenway in tlie chair), Waucliop. Oman, lies, F. E. Gaddum, Fenwick, Reynolds, White. Humphreys, Major Fletcher, Captain Pitt, D. J. Barry) Dymock, and Coleman. Tlie Minister for Defence wrote, stating that it was the intention of the Department to prepare a .history of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces and indicating the direction the compilation could be assisted, by forwarding photos, correspondence and other records in the possession of returned soldier's, or their friends or relations.—To be referred to tlie Returned Soldiers’ Association. A letter ivas received acknowledging the committee’s letter re the Auckland, v. Wellington copper trail challenge, and stating that Mr Bickford, the hon. • financial organiser, was out- of Auckland and that the committee’s letter would he laid before him on his returned. —Received. The Minister for Defence forwarded a comparison of rates of pay and allowances in respect of a private soldier in the British Army, Canadian Expeditionary Forces, Australian Imperial Forces and the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces —Received Tire New Zealana Returned Soldiers’ Association, Wellington, wrote stating that the Minister, had agreed to increase the mufti allowance for returned soldiers to v£s ss—On the motion of .Mr Humphreys the letter was held over until such time as the change had come into operation when steps will be taken to rescind the resolution under which the difference between the -Government allowance and tlie amount actually paid by the committee wak paid up. The Advisory Board wrote acknowledging contributions to tlie Regimental Fund. —Received. / An account was receive*! from the Cook County Hospital for £ll 8s 2d, for extras for soldier patients during the month of April.—Passed for payment. ■ ■ v ivN* The cash statement was as follows: Receipts :—Mrs E. F. M. Burgess, Wounded Soldier's’ and Sailors’ -Fund. £2; Defence Department,, rebate £4 2s 6d; Defence, refund. £2 : Matawai Sports Club, Red Cross Fund, £l4; South Canterbury War Relief Society, refund £2 10<ri Mr D. T. Laugher Wounded Soldiers’ bund, £IOT Mr T.- Craill, General-Fund, £ll 10s; total £46 2s 6d 11 he expenditure for the fortnight totalled £163 ss. Air Humphreys reported that he and Mr Dymock visited the hospital and lie was nleased to state .that the soldier patients were well looked after and that there wa S notlimg that they. wanted for. There -were 30 'soldierb under treatment. ■
