THE EDUCATION OE CHILDREN.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —The splendid article on true education in the Times of the 9th inst., comes indeed at an opportune time and strikes the keynote of the future. The subject of education is dear to .the hearts of many who see in its correct solution the hope of a world fit to live in where co-opera-tion, brotherhood and love will take the place of unscrupulous competition, rivalry and which ultimately lead to war. Now, Sir, I maintan we must get back to “First Principles” as our great philosophers have said: Religion Ethics, and morals should be taught before a commercial education. If you give a commercial education to one who has brought over from a past life (for a child is not a blank sheet of paper without any past behind him) the seeds of selfishness, greed and hatred you only make him a more capable scoundrel*, and give him the weapons wherewith of doing greater harm to his more gentle and loving brother, who is struggling to manifest the Christ-like qualities of love and gentleness. I would like those who have a “heart at leisure” to write more on this subject so as to influence , the public mind, as I notice your columns are ever generously thrown open to questions of public' interest.—l am, etc., G. H. LOCKETT.
