The Dunedin J.C. have increased the value of the Otago Steeplechase by 150sovs. It is now worth 500sovs, and the Birthday Handicap has been raised to 400sovs. T. W. Price, the well known trainer and driver of trotters, and assistant to the starter at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meetings, is booked to go into camp shortly. It is reported ■ from the south that Rorke’s Drift is slightly amiss. It is thought that a few days’ rest will put the Calibre gelding right again. R. Ramage, who rode Carbinewhen he won the Melbourne'-Cup, was seen in the saddle at a country meeting near Bunbury, West Australia, on April 12. He won two races with a horse named Gleneer, who is by Carbineer, a son of Carbine. Wedge, who gained . distinction by, defeating Desert Gold in the Caulfield Futurity Stakes, won the Epsom Handicap at the Epsom Meeting, I Melbourne, on April 20. He was ridden by H. Cairns, and with lOst. in the saddle was sent out favorite, and won by two lengths in Imin 41|sec. The New Zealand-bred Sauci was unplaced in this eveijt, . but he got a very bad run. R. Hatch, who had an idea of coming to Wellington, has decided to go from Marton to Hastings, anticipating plenty of riding with Sid Reid out of the way. _ . H. J. Brown, a popular Flemington trainer, died in-St. Vincent’s hospital on April 19.
