KAITI WHARF RECONSTRUCTION.
"work to be held over. At the meeting of the Harbor Board yesterday, the question of continuing, the work of re-construct-ing portion of the Haiti wharf was further discussed,, and a's a result it was decided to hold over the balance of the work for the meantime. In this connection, the Works Committee reported:—The necessity of ordering further quantifies of timber, costing between £l5O and £l6O, to proceed -'With the secong 60 feet' of _ wharf re-construction on the . Kaiti side near the coal bunker, was pointed out to _ the committee. The committee decided to recommend to the Board that in view of the inv proved conditions of the river, and the changes to bo expected when the groynes are erected, it is unnecessary to proceed with this section of wharf. The committee directed that the works be held over until the matter conies before the Board. The Harbormaster „ reported, upon this matter as under: —The extension of Kaiti wharf. Sixty feet of this wharf have been completed and sixty feet remain to complete to the coal bunkers. I should recommend that the Board sanction the completion of this part as it Will be most useful to the berthing accommodation of the port" for the 200 feet berthage at No. 3 is lost through being silted up. It-will be some time before it can be cleared out again fit to berth vessels. In reply to remarks by the Board, the Harbormaster said it was not impossible to work the.harbor without the addition, but it would be useful to have the extension. Mr Smith remarked that it would cost about £450 to complete the wharf. Tlie chairman said that new timber had been purchased for the work already completed costing £B2, stock j in trade £192. iron work £l7, wages £l2O, a cost of over £4IS. I Mr Prc-ston said the matter of pur- I chasing new timber bad not been { before the Board. I It was pointed out that the origi- j lial decision was to deck 120 feet. The chairman said that the fore-' man had ascertained that there was only sufficient timber for 60 feet. He authorised tlie purchase of some ’ extra timber to complete the work to that point. Mr Preston pointed out that the . Board had not been consulted on the matter. Mr Lysnar complained that when the matter was being considered by tlie Works Committee it was not known that the whole of the work had been authorised. , Mr Preston also complained over the lack, of information on this matter. He considered the Board was not wise in banking and gambling on the water in the harbor remaining as deep as at present. A flood may come and in 24 hours the position may be as bad as ever and the Board would, be pushed for accommodation. He, however was willing to compromise and moved that the additional work stand over in the meantime. This was carried.
