RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION.
CALLING FOR VOLUNTARY LABOR.
A HINT TO LOCAL RAILWAY LEAGUE.
“It’s just an ordinary circular,” remarked Deputy Mayor Brown at the Borough Council meeting last night when a circular on railway matters from the Auckland Railway League came up for consideration. This circular, the contents 9f which have already been made public in the Times, urged that- a more lively interest .should be taken in public works, especially railway matters, also suggesting that tlie local Railway League should affiliate with the Auckland League. “It’s not an ordinary circular,” retorted Cr. Miller. He went on to say that the Mayor of Waihi and others had obtained a number of volunteers to work o:i the Waihi section. He was sure they could get volunteers here. He had noticed when travelling up the railway line that the average man employed on the line was over military age. He thought we could get men to carry on the labor. He thought the Railway League should get busy and call for volunteers so that the GisborneNapier railway could be pushed on with. ■ Such had been done in the north. He moved that the letter be referred to tlie Gisborne Railway League and ask them to call an early meeting. ~ , . , , Cr. Munns said the instance referred to was a result of a direct chmlenge made by the Minister for Public Works. He thought that it was up to the local League to bring pressure to hear on the Government with the object of getting the same promise. . . Cr. Miller’s motion was earned.
