The fourteenth annual show of the Nuhaka A. P. Society was held on their grounds at Nuhaka on New Year’s Day. Although rain threatened in the morning it gradually ■ cleared away and turned out, a fine day. There were a large number of visitors from Hawke’s Bay, AVairoa, Gisborne and surrounding districts, and the attendance was good. - A feature of the show was the large number of motor cars present, indicating that although we are passing 'through abnormal times, the prosperity of the district is still in the ascendant Taken .all round the show was a success, and it is to be hoped that .despite the hard times the country is passing through the society will keep going. The genial secretary, Mr R, Steed, worked assiduously all dav, and with an energetic staff and officials the gathering passed oft without a hitch. • There were several side shows on the ground, and all seemed to be doing a flourishing trade. There were very few draught hoises exhibited, and Mr A. J. Cameron cleaned up the programme. In saddle and harness horses Messrs Dickie and Kirk (judges) had a busy time and there were some very ra>r equines shown. The champion hack, Miss AVachsmanu’s Bob, is a good sort of a gelding. Mr Dunlop’s Scout is a nice cut of a cob, that would take a lot of beating. Reliu Pomana s Tamkai is a stylish harness horse and is a useful animal. In stud sheep the judge (Mr 1 • Harrison) said the Romneys and Lincolns were a splendid lot, being icalK tip-top sheep. Mr A. J. Cameron had a field day and wins Mr R. E. Jefferson’s/ solid silver 'rose bowl tor most points in all sheep classes, having won it three years in successionThis gentleman also tied with Mr A. Richardson for Mr H. Marshall’s silver cup for three flock 2-tooth ewes, Romney cross. In fat sheep Mr 0. Fenwick (judge) was very pleased with the class of sheep that came under his scrutiny. Ho was of the opinion that they would not disgrace their owners in much bigger shows, and were certainly ahead of the fat sheep classes, shown at the Gisborne Show, in which Mr Fenwick was the principal prize taker This gentleman bad a very difficult task of allocating the prizes in the different classes. Mr A. J.. Cameron won the points prize in this class for a shield presnted by Mr AV. E. Austin (representing Cooper’s dip). The cattle exhibited were a very good lot, especially the Hereford®i and Polled Angus. In the yearling Hereford heifer class Mr Jefferson exlubitd a beautiful heifer that took first prize at the AVairarapa Show, but she failed to gain a place. This gentleman had it all his own way in this particular breed, whilst- he also took a number of prizes in the Polled Anr ''us section. Mr Jefferson von the points prizes. Mr A. J. Cameron was very much in evidence with some fine beasts. „ , , Messrs Dickie and Kirk had plenty j to do in judging the competitions, in which the competition was keenThere was some very fine riding by the ladies, and it would be very bard to find the superior of several of the lady contestants Their handling ot the horses they rode, was a lesson to many of the sterner sex. In vegetables Mr Mayo had plent 3 to do awarding the variQUs prizes. Mr Steed won the points prize and. exhibited a fine, lot of vegetables. Mr Lambert (AVairoa) had a slendid sample of new potatoes, but unfortunately, he had only three tubers instead of four, which robbed him of first prize. In the fruit class there was a splendid variety. A special feature was the lemons exhibited by Mi VV. Tait, which would be very hard to beat' anywhere. . . , Mrs C. McKenzie took the points prize in cut flowers for Mrs Baty s special prize. There was a nice array of blooms. ~ In cooking Mrs AA . Sturm won the poiiits prize (given by Mr W. Sturm ami there were some nice plates oi edibles on exhibition. Following is the prize list: draught horses. (Judge, AV. Runciman; stewards, R. ■ Mclntyre (senior), R. laykir.)
