PERSONAL NOTES.

Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald will arrive fiom the South by the Arahura this morning. In connection with the Military Ballot list (published in this issue), the local Croup Commander advises that Grevis George Winter was in Singapore. Some time ago he went to England, where he is now in camp. The name of Richard Fearon Jackson also appears in the list. He went into camp in March last. Mr. Leggett, of Ormond, received advice by the last mail that his nephew, Captain Oliver Leggett, commander of the cruiser Caroline, who a few months ago was awarded tho Legion of Honor, has recently been decorated with the Russian Order of St. Anne; also, that another nephew, Captain Brindley Acworth, has been awarded the Military Medal for services with the Royal Flying Corps in France. Among the recipients of honors recently bestowed on tho New Zealand Forces appears the name of Company Sergeant-Major T. W. Slingsby. elder son of Mrs. Slingsby, Stafford Street, who has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Sergt. Slingsby left with his younger brother in the 7th Reinforcements, aiid has been nearly two years on active service in Egypt and France, being attached to and in charge of the Ist Field Ambulance Transport, A.S.C. Beforeenlisting lie was employed in the engineering branch of the G.S.F.M. Co., and his many friends wilj be pleased to hear of the honor which has been conferred upon him. Mr W. A. Barton, S.M. yesterday received the sad intelligence that his brother, Mr Chas. A. Barton, had been drowned while crossing a river in the Wanganui district. The late Mr Barton ,was for many years Clerk of Court at Hokitika and later at Wanganui and Auckland. He retired some years ago to take up farming in the Raetilii district and his sad death took place in the vicinity of his homestead'. He was very well known in boating circles in both islands and also took a keen interest in other outdoor pastimes- He leaves a widow and a large grown-up family and lias either two or three sons at the front. He was about 60 years of age.
