Press Association Telegram. AUCKLAND, July 2. A vessel which arrived at Auckland to-day reports that the entire crew of the Waitotara arrived at Noumea safely. There was no accident of any kind. They had been well provided with food in the .boats. They were picked up within 24 hours after they had abandoned their ship. The fire started in one of the holds, presumably from spontaneous combustion. The captain left the steamer in his pyjamas. The crew behaved admirably. NAPIER, July 2. Replying to a six o’clock closing deputation, Mr. Vigor Brown said he would advocate in, the House the military authorities taking charge of the liquor traffic during the war, with power to make whatever they thought necessary respecting both (soldiers and civilians. Both classes must be treated alike. The deputation did not view the proposal ftiv orably. - WELLINGTON, July 2. A cable has been received by Mr. Thomas Gray from Rowset Hodson, London, to the effect that the English Courts decided against the Government- in respect to the New Zealand cheese which arrived in London between October Ist. 1916, and January 16th this year. This involved roughly 14,000 tons of cheese. The Government- decided that the Government would pay' the average 123 s per hundredweight on the quantity seized prior to the requisiton of 91 d free on board in New Zealand. As a result some £280,000 will be paid to those interested in the cheese, consignors or buj’ers. Mr Sydney Johnston, a well-known Hawke’s Bay sheepfarmer, elder brother of the Hon. C. J. Johnston, Speaker of the Legislative Council, died in England on Friday last HAWERA, July 2.
