iAfIR. WITTY STOUTLY OPPOSES THE PROPOSAL.
Press Association Telegram. CHRISTCHURCH. June 26. A petition for six o’clock closing, bearing 1851 signatures, was presented to Mr. AYitty, member for Riccarton. He gave a straight-out refusal on the ground of hardship to hotel employees. He would oppose a referendum on hotel hours, but would, if necessary, favor absolute prohibition.

A petition signed by 3039 electors, praying for the closing of hotel bars at six o’clock as a war measure, was presented yesterday to Mr. J. A’. Young, member for Waikato, at a largely attended meeting whereat the Alayor presided. Including tlie Cambridge petition, a total of 4364 names in the Waikato electorate favor the proposal. Mr. Young said he was in hearty accord, and stood fully prepared to support the petition when the opportunity offered.
