OFF TO CAMP.
' 27THS DEPART YESTERDAY MORNING.
Owing to dislocation of the ferry service somo. doubt was felt as to whether the 27th Reinforcement draft, which was due to leave for camp yesterday evening, would bo able to make the journey. _ However, arrangements were made for the Richardson steamer Mako to make a daylight trip, six o’clock being fixed for the time of departure, Under the arrangements made the Mako was to arrive at Napier yesterday afternoon, the reinforcements leaving there' to-day for Palmerston North, Trentham being reached on the lollowing day. On Saturday afternoon 64 men paraded at the Drill Hall. They were addressed by the Ven. Archdeacon Packe, who said that he was voicing the feelings of the people.of the town when he expressed the wish that the men would have a safe journey, good health, and a safe- return to New Zealand. He said that the men wore not only to fight the enemy, hut they were to fight the power of darkness, and until it was subdued the war would continue. At the parade at the Garrison Hall at 5 o’clock yesterday morning the men were presented with “housewives” and ribbons by the ladies of the Ladies’ Patriotic Committee. Headed by tho City Band and a detachment of the National Reserve the men marched down to the Kaiti wharf, where they 'were taken out to the Mako in the Kiritona, the Mako sailing for Napier about 7.30.
