A MAORI WAR VETERAN.
LONDON, January 2. A wide circle of friends in New Zealand, particularly veterans of the Maori war, will learn with regret of the death of Captain C. Maling, New Zealand Cross, which occurred at bis residence in Westbourne Grove on the 18th inst., after a short illness. Captain Maling in the early sixties was a member of the Naval Vounteers m Nelson, and joined the Colonial Forces in the North Island during the war. He was a particularly successful scout, and was selected to organise and command the small group of guides which did such great service through both campaigns—on the West Coast against Titokowaru, and on the East Coast against the Hauhaus. It was while serving in this capacity that he uas awarded the coveted . New Zealand Cross, which ranked with the Victoria Cross. After the war Captain Maling saw many years’ service on surveys in New Zealand, especially in connection with running the telegraph wires in the far North. He came to England a few years ago and lived quietly in Warwickshire and in London. He generally appeared at New Zealand gatherings, but was of a retiring disposition, and only a limited number of New Zealanders knew much of his past services to the Dominion. His wife survives him.
