THE RIGA BATTLES.
RUSSIANS HOLD THEIR GAINS. - . ENORMOUS ENEMY LOSSES VAIN. (United Service.) (Received Feb. 12, 6.45 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 12. The Daily Mail’s Petrograd correspondent says the Russians hold_ their gains at Riga on a front of seven miles. The Germans concentrated all their available forces in an attempt to dislodge them. The heaviness of the enemy losses recalled the battle of Verdun. The Russians holding the Babittirul line threaten Mitau and the whole German left flank. An Army Order found on prisoners, advised the eating of crows, which were described as excellent nutritious food. The Morning Post’s Petrograd correspondent says if is officially estimated that the enemy forces on a ■thousand miles of the Russian front average a division to every six miles; on the French front a division to every four miles; and at Salonika a division to every 14 miles.
The latest German peace method is to send up fire balloons, over the Russian lines, which, when blazing, release leaflets printed in Russian, Polish, and Tartar.
